Ink & Gouache, London 2021

This series is about transitions and resilience.
They are an exploration of our mental shift during transition times,
a wish of moving forward and  a reminder that these times are also an opportunity to grow and learn from them.

My inspirations for these paintings in video...

Turn the sound ON

This series of 7 paintings is a collection of ink and gouache on paper made during the first Lockdown in London. Not so long after moving from Hong Kong to UK, the pandemic started in Europe and reminds us how important is to keep a flexible thinking and how little is under our control.

The unknown, the reduction of our travel areas and the crazy amount of information that we had to face on a daily basis was a pretty challenging landscape for our mental health.

Personally, the lack of personal time was a pretty difficult one and exploring my thoughts through paint was very comforting and healing. I had no real goal when started these paintings beside a conscious choice of colours. I liked to loose control over it and give myself the necessary freedom that my body and soul needed.

In these paintings, you will notice uncontrolled brush strokes layered up with structured patterns.

Gradient effect, disappearing graphics suggesting our transitions from one state to another and the ginkgo as a symbole of our resilience. A playful and ascending composition demonstrating a wish to always go forward.
And a deep blue colour in reference to the East is contrasting with some warm Mediterranean earthy colours of my childhood.

Shifting and settling in new situations can be quite scary and uncomfortable, however they are also opportunities to create something so unique. I loved every minutes of these studio times, they are very personal but I hope they will speak to you too.

I love that this collection is made of paintings from the inside-out.

They playfully layer ups space and time and I hope they will inspire you as much as they did for me to go through unavoidable and necessary shifts...
