Magic Mirror is an absolute institution in HK. They’ve cut children’s hair for over 28 years in their magical, fun filled salon decorated with traditional carrousel animals.
It was time, however, for Magic Mirror to rethink their space and they kindly commissioned me to work on their new murals.
After discussing a few different options, we all agreed that the carrousel animals should remain the centre pieces of the space. They were made in Europe 30 years ago and are a distinct part of the Magic Mirror’s identity. The wall décor, therefore should be complementary and in keeping with the existing whimsical and of course magical carnival theme and to take it a little further, relate to the happenings of a salon.
And so the story was born…of little confetti escaping from bottles of shampoo, and morphing into bubbles that float and dance around the room. As the bubbles wonder they get bigger and bigger until…POP! What remains is the bubble’s delicate splatter…up the walls and across the cashier.
Before/After carrousel animal restauration
I’ve spends 3 days onsite sanding, painting & varnishing them… I’ have to admit… it’s quite an experience to spend the day with a bunny ^^
I loved working on this project and it was funny because my second son is currently completely obsessed with bubbles so I had had plenty of bubble sessions with him, watching them delicately meander and then pop, before I had the experience of painting them.
I can’t wait to bring my son to Magic Mirror for his first hair cut, just like i did with his older brother but for now, i will let those beautiful curls grow a little longer.
